Q: Can
I add canonical domains (C-Name) to a virtually hosted domain on my
virtual server?
A: Absolutely. All you need to do is
send us a request to add the canonical to your virtual host's domain.
Please submit the following information with your request:
- The name of the virtual host
- The canonical domain name you wish to add to the virtual host
- A statement that you understand there will be a $25.00 setup fee for each
canonical you add.
Upon receiving your request, we will add an entry in the DNS zone file of the
virtual host's domain.
Example of a canonical domain or C-Name is our Domain Registering pages:
http://domain.rshweb.com
Q: What
are your Primary and Secondary name servers?
A: RSH Web Services actually has
three name servers. Although for registering or transferring domains ending in
.com .net .org and 95% of all other domain names only two are needed
Primary name server domain:
NS1.DNSRSH.NET
Primary name server IP:
64.49.206.234
Secondary name server domain: NS2.DNSRSH.NET
Secondary name server IP:
209.61.150.208
Q: Who
bills me for registering my domain name?
A: RSH Web Services will bill you
directly for the use of your domain name if you have used our registering
services. You will not receive a bill from InterNIC (Network Solutions) For
more information on our domain registering services please see:
http://domain.rshweb.com
Q: What
if I already have a domain name registered?
A: If you already have a domain name
registered, it is very easy to switch to RSH Web Services virtual server
system. All you need to do is order a server!
Once we receive and process your order, we will send you an email that
explains how to change your domain name registration so that it points to our
domain name servers. Once the DNS has been changed for your domain, it
only takes a day or two to have your DNS working on your new virtual server.
Q: How
can I check to see if a domain name is taken?
A: Use our Domain
Availability Check at to see if the domain name you want is available.
If you find a domain name you want to use, reserve it now, as it may not be
available tomorrow. (We've actually had clients lose their preferred domain
name because another person registered it just a few hours earlier!)
When you sign up for a new virtual server account, RSH Web Services will
assist you in registering your domain name.
Q: Can
I point multiple domain names to my virtual server?
A: Of course! We make it easy to
configure and administer multiple domains on your virtual server. Pointing
domain names to separate directories is called Virtual Hosting, and is one of
the most popular features.
By default, new domain names are pointed to a special vhosts directory that
allows you to customize your virtually hosted domains to a degree that simply
isn't possible on our competitors' systems.
Q: How
long does it take to register a domain name?
A: If you send your registration request
through RSH Web Services Domain Registration, we can get your domain name
registered within 24-36 hours.
If you send your request directly to InterNIC, there is nothing we can do to
expedite the process.
Q: Can
I use foreign domains?
A: For International Clients One of the
most frequently asked questions that international users ask is, "Do your
servers support international domain names?" The answer is yes!
In fact, over 35% our clients are from outside of the United States and
Canada. Most of our international clients report faster server speeds from our
servers than from those located in their own country!
To use an international domain name with your virtual server, you can choose
from the following options:
Your first option is to register your international domain name with your
country's registration office using our name server information.
This will allow us to host your domain name on our name servers and point it
to the IP address of your virtual server.
Please use the information below for registration purposes:
Primary name server domain: NS1.DNSRSH.NET
Primary name server IP:
64.49.206.234
Secondary name server domain: NS2.DNSRSH.NET
Secondary name server IP:
209.61.150.208
Your second option is to register your international domain name with your
country's registration office using your own or your Internet Service
Provider's name server information. This will allow you to do your own domain
name serving.
When your order is processed, we will send you your IP address. You can then
configure the local name server to point your domain name to this address.
Regardless of which country you're in, you can always register a standard
.com, .org, or .net domain here in the United States, if you prefer.
Q: What
constitutes a valid domain name?
A: You may register domain names up
to 67 characters in length, including the extension such as ".com".
So in reality, the name has a limit of 64 characters. Only 0-9, A-Z, and the
dash ( - ) are valid characters in a domain name.
Q: Can
I direct a canonical domain to a different directory on my virtual server?
A: Yes. The canonical domain would be
treated the same way as a virtual host domain on your virtual server. Thus,
you would need to run the vaddvhost command to add the canonical domain to
your virtual server. During the configuration process, you will be prompted
for the directory to which the canonical domain will eventually reside.
Q: How
can I get extended whois information now that Network Solutions has
changed their database information?
A: In order to view detailed whois
information you need to check the whois server of the registrar responsible
for the domain.
First, perform a normal whois on the domain, using the following command at
your virtual server's Telnet or SSH prompt:
% whois rshweb.com
Look for the line that states the Whois Server:
Whois Server: whois.networksolutions.com
The command will then look like this:
% whois -h whois.networksolutions.com rshweb.com
Q: How
can I achieve Zero Downtime when transferring a domain from a previous
hosting provider to my current UNIX virtual server?
A: When transferring a domain from a
previous provider to become a virtual host on your virtual server you will
want to minimize the downtime as much as possible. You may follow the steps
below to ensure this.
Setup the directories on your virtual server for the new account. This is
accomplished by using the vaddvhost command.
Upload the content with an FTP client to the appropriate directory.
Request the addition of the domain name as a virtual host to RSH Web Services
Request the transfer of the DNS with the InterNIC Registry company
Completing the setup on your virtual server prior to any changes with the
domain registry promises to reduce any downtime. When the DNS has completed
transferring, the virtual server will begin to respond to web requests as the
DNS propagates, with no down time to the site.
After you have confirmed the change of resolution, you may shut down the old
site.
